Thomas Anders about his new album and his life:

"Songs Forever" is a really personal album I did. And I started thinking about this album, it was in summer of 2004, as far as I remember. And I was thinking about my past albums, I did 19 pop-albums and I’ve thought: "Well, it’s time, maybe, just to change a bit and to make a new music style". And I’m a really big fan of swing, orchestra and score music; so, I had an idea just to take songs from 80’s because, you know, I feel like a child of 80’s. I had my first big success in 80’s.

So I took a few favorite songs like "True" from Spandau Ballet, Rick Astley "Cry For Help", or I took Whitesnake – "Is This Love?", Lisa Stansfield "All Around The World", so, a lot of really great tunes, and I arranged them with my friend and conductor, dear friend and conductor, and we made new arrangements around it, so we gave this kind of songs a different style and, you know, gave to music a different look.

And over the months I really had a great time of working with these songs and with these song materials. We took about 120 songs we’ve chosen first, so we reduced it and at the end we had 18 songs, and on the album you will hear 13. And it was a really great time, so it’s very-very personal to me, it comes from the bottom of my heart, because I feel this kind of music is so intent and so strong and I think it’s a really big shot.

"Songs That Live Forever" is for the Eurovision Song Contest, for the pre-Eurovision Song Contest here in Germany. So we have three artists which join the competition and will fight against each other. Songs That Live Forever is the intro song from the album and this song, the intro, was the first one, because I had an idea to make an intro just about 2-2,5 minutes to tell people what’s going on the album, what they can expect.

"Songs That Live Forever", in lyrics, is "memories" that really "don’t stop haunting you", and every time you turn on the radio you may hear some tunes, and these songs will give you some reflections of the past, and you have "memories that don’t stop haunting you" in your mind. This is an intro song from the album. At the end of November I was asked by the German TV if I really would love to be a part of this competition, of the Eurovision Song Contest, and I wasn’t quite sure about this but at the end I decided to do this. But I said I just wanna do this competition only with this song, "Songs That Live Forever". But it was not ready yet because we had only the intro version. And we made a burden part and did the composition, you know, in this Eurovision Song Contest’ theme. So I think we have a really-really great song, I love it and I cross fingers that I’ll have a chance to sing from Germany in Athens.

We worked in studio; recording time for the album was between October, 2005 and the end of January, 2006. We had a few sessions - with jazz musicians we had recordings at Topas Studios in Cologne, and my vocals, backing vocals and mixing was in Frankfurt, then the Babelsberg Film Orchestra took its part and we did a lot of recordings in Warsaw with the Warsaw Symphonic Orchestra. So you can tell: the different parts and different studios, we mixed altogether, it was unbelievable work, especially for the arranger.

Because every part had to be correct on the right time, so he did, as he told me, 1500 copies just for musicians. But it was such a pleasure to do this, just to see, how the song grows. It started with drums, piano and bass, the "live" bass, and it was guitar and then was some percussions and string orchestra, and some horns and flutes, and clarinet and backing vocals and, you know, all over the weeks and months we created the complete album, and it was for me just a really great lifetime experience.

It’s funny but it’s really interesting for lots of people what I’m doing when I’m not doing music. First of all I have to say that I love doing music, it’s not working for me, it’s not just something I have to do, it’s something I really like to do. And so I spend a lot of time making music, talking about music, thinking about music, but on the other side I love to cook. For me this is something when I really can relax in the kitchen, doing dishes for friends or for family, working on it, having my glass of wine and trying to make something new - the pasta or the salad. My favorite dishes are European and Asian cooking style, so I really love to do this.

And I love my family, it’s very important for me but I’m not very relaxed all the time. So I love to spend time with my little boy but sometimes I need to rest a bit. And just to relax I’m doing some sports. To be really honest, I don’t like it, but I do it twice a week, if I find the time. It’s quite normal, I would say. And the rest of time I spend in my studio, in my office.

If you look back at the history of Thomas Anders you just have to look back at the history of Modern Talking, this is really one. And I’m very proud of Modern Talking, because I think it’s an unbelievable career we did, and we sold tones of CDs, and had major success in so many countries in the world! So, it’s a part of my life, and I don’t want to negotiate it. It was a gift for me to have this career. But you have your development, you getting older and you have a new taste or a different taste. And I think it’s very-very important for everyone to let the taste out, you know what I wanna say, just to work on it. And if you feel something like I did in a special way with the album, with this kind of swing, with mood of music, you should do this. And definitely I don’t wanna sing my whole life exactly the same tunes like Modern Talking. When I have my shows, when I have my concerts, people can listen to big hits of Modern Talking from "Cheri Cheri Lady", "Brother Louie" to "Geronimo’s Cadillac", and on the album "Songs Forever" there’ll be "You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul" in a very-very special version. So people can listen to the music when I sing it, but for this new period of my life I’m very intent on this kind of music, and I just cross fingers that people will like it.

Забавно, но многим людям действительно интересно, что я делаю, когда я не занимаюсь музыкой. Прежде всего, я должен сказать, что я люблю заниматься музыкой, это не просто работа для меня, то, что я должен делать, это то, что я действительно люблю делать. Поэтому я провожу много времени, создавая музыку, говоря о музыке, думая о музыке, но с другой стороны, я люблю готовить. Для меня это то, что мне позволяет отдохнуть, готовя на кухне блюда для друзей или моей семьи, когда я могу выпить бокал белого вина, попытаться сделать что-то новое – пасту или салат. Мои любимые блюда – европейский, азиатский стиль, мне действительно нравится этим заниматься.

И я люблю свою семью, она очень важна для меня, но не всегда это дает возможность отдохнуть; я люблю проводить время с моим малышом, но иногда мне нужно немного отдохнуть и расслабиться. Я занимаюсь спортом. Если честно, мне это не очень нравится, но я это делаю 2 раза в неделю, если у меня есть время. Вот так, это вполне нормально, я бы сказал, и остальное время я провожу в студии и в офисе.

Если вы оглянетесь на историю Томаса Андерса, вам придется вспомнить историю Modern Talking, они на самом деле связаны. Я очень горжусь Modern Talking, потому что я думаю, что у нас была просто невероятная карьера, и мы продали тонны CD, у нас был огромный успех во многих странах мира, следовательно, это часть моей жизни, я не хочу пропускать это. Знаете, для меня это был дар – у меня была эта карьера, но вы развиваетесь, вы становитесь старше, у вас появляется новый вкус, или другой вкус, и я думаю, что для всех очень-очень важно позволить себе удовлетворять его, что я хочу сказать, надо работать над этим. И если вы почувствуете что-то особенное, как это было у меня с альбомом, этот свинг, это настроение музыки, вам следует это сделать.

Конечно же, я не хочу всю жизнь петь такие же точно песни, как Modern Talking. Когда я выступаю в шоу и концертах, люди могут услышать лучшие хиты Modern Talking, такие, как "Cheri Cheri Lady", "Brother Louie", "Geronimo’s Cadillac", и, в альбоме, в новом альбоме "Songs Forever" будет "You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul" в совершенно особенной версии.
